Hey there Popsters, welcome to the first Pop Bitez of August!

To quote the pop-master general, Elvis Costello, “Welcome to the working week, I know it don’t thrill you, I hope it don’t kill you..”

I’ll be honest with you Popsters, I’m not really feeling it this week. It’s wicked hot which in turn makes me perpetually sleepy and, as a result, I’ve procrastinated on this week’s column all weekend. So, today’s Pop Bitez will be brief rather than the usual “blitz”, and without further yada, yada, yada, let’s get this..the hell with it…you know the rest.

• Attack the Block

Yes, summer is winding down, and most of the big flicks have come and gone, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a sleeper or two still to come. Take for example, Attack the Block from the U.K., currently in limited release and opening wider in the coming weeks. The buzz on this one is great. In the wake of Cowboys and Aliens we have “Limeys and Aliens” and, I have to admit, this flick looks like a lot more fun. Keep your eyes out for this one!

• I Want a Cybertecture Mirror!

In the age of social media and the “me, me, me decade”, I can’t think of a better invention for our self-loving times than a giant iPad that doubles as a mirror mounted to the wall. This one is priced around 8 grand but, as always, that price is bound to come down eventually. Check out the video and the website for Cybertecture Mirror!

• Finally, The Farrah Barbie!

Mattel will soon be releasing a limited edition “Farrah Fawcett Barbie,” with proceeds going to the Farrah Fawcett Foundation for Cancer Research. The new pop collectible will be available at BarbieCollector.com and at most leading toy retail stores.

For many years, Farrah fought a litigious war for the rights to her iconic poster, she won that fight a few months before she lost her battle with cancer.

Personally, I’ve never bought or owned a Barbie Doll but this may turn out to be my one and only exception.

• Stereo MCs Emperor’s Nightingale

Today I thought I’d include a few videos from a new album that’s been getting a lot of play on my iPod lately, Emperor’s Nightingale, from one of my fav U.K. acts, Stereo MCs.

Sadly, in the states, the Stereo MCs are considered a “one hit wonder”, famous only for their 90s club hit “Connected” but if that’s all you know from this band, in my useless opinion, you’ve really been missing out.
